Apple cancel the 27-inch Mini LED display project, which will be good for OLED?

On April 11, industry researchers reported that Apple has abandoned plans to launch a 27-inch Mini-LED display, which was originally expected to be available in the summer of 2022, but has not yet been released.

According to previous reports, Apple had shipped some Mini LED panels for the display last year, but later "temporarily canceled" the project for unspecified reasons. So far, however, Apple has not given a specific reason for the cancellation of the Mini LED screen. It is also unclear whether the project will be temporarily suspended or abandoned altogether.

It is understood that the Display will support ProMotion technology and is a new model between the Studio Display and the high-end Pro Display XDR. The current Studio Display, which starts at 11,499 yuan, has 5K resolution but doesn't support ProMotion technology.

However, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo disagrees and believes the product will eventually work According to him, mass production of the project is scheduled to start in late 2024 or early 2025.

He said the display would include all the features "you would expect from a high-end display," likely referring to 120HzProMotion support. In addition, it will use a new backplane material that differs from those commonly found in Apple's current lineup of products with screens.

In terms of more specific details, the new glass back will make the panel thinner and the entire display bezel thinner, thus making the overall case more stylish, and the product life can also become longer.

Overall, whether the display is released or not can't hide the fact that Apple's lineup is using OLED displays in place of Mini LED panels. For example, iPad, Macbook and other products.

Given Apple's status as the world's largest consumer electronics brand, changes in its preferences will naturally affect the balance of the supply chain as well. In this regard, DSCC predicts that the shipment growth of MiniLED panels will not exceed 2024, and after that, we will see the production of the panel slow down or flat, and basically stop rising until 2025.

Apple, on the other hand, has embraced OLED, a technology that after years of development has become a rare phenomenon of screen burning. At the same time, with the reduction of cost and the increase of demand, OLED is expected to surpass Mini LED in the market share of high-end tablets and laptops in the future.
